Mary Emelia Moore (March 7, 1869 – May 17, 1951) was born in Dunedin, a port city on the southeastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island. In 1893, Mary Emelia Moore graduated from the University of Otago and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1896, in the wave of the religious revival movement, she went to Yichang, China, as a resident teacher to teach at a girls’ school founded by the Scottish Evangelical Association. Meanwhile, in Yichang, she integrated the church, hospital, and school into one entity. She took the lead in founding “Private Yichang Aiona Girls’ Middle School” and “Renji Hospital”. After arriving in Yichang, she actively made the initial attempts to promote new – style education, breaking through the bondage of the feudal ethics that “a woman without talent is virtuous”, challenging the feudal ideology of preferring sons over daughters, and setting a precedent for girls in Yichang to receive new – style education. She dedicated her entire life to improving the living conditions of Chinese women.
